Death Of Howard Black
Howard Black tragically passed away at the age of 31 in the year 1998. Jack Black opened up about the loss of his older brother in an interview with Parade. While discussing his own upbringing, which he described as somber and disheartening, Jack Black shared:
“Losing a family member is the worst thing I could imagine.” Over 25 years ago, Jack’s older brother, Howard, passed away at the age of 31 due to AIDS.
Jack reflected, “I have two gay siblings: my older sister, Rachel, and my older brother, Howard. He had a significant impact on me. I attended my first rock concert with him. He was 23 and I was 11. He was brilliant, vibrant, and full of imagination. He influenced the kind of music I like.”
Jack recounted that his brother’s decline was something the whole family witnessed. “[His death] didn’t come suddenly. We all saw the decline,” the actor shared. “He was only 31 years old. So young. We lost something precious. It was devastating. When we lost Howard, it hit us all hard, but it hit my mom especially. She never fully recovered.”
Yet, even before Howard’s passing, the family faced challenges. Jack’s parents separated when he was 10, and by the time he was 14, he was grappling with drug issues. “I remember a lot of turmoil during that time,” he admitted. “Cocaine was causing me a lot of trouble… I was involved with some really shady people. One of them even threatened to kill me, so I was afraid to attend school. I wanted to get away from that environment.”
