Dr Anthony Fauci on Monday announced that he is stepping down from his role in the federal Goverment

He will step down in December from his roles as the director of NIAID, a job he has held for 38 years, and as Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden 

He was instrumental in guiding humanity through the AIDS and COVID-19 pandemics of our time 

Fauci, 81, worked for seven American presidents and assisted in guiding the nation through a number of health crises 

He had a significant role in halting the AIDS epidemic, beginning when he was the NIAID's young director in the early 1980s 

Throughout his career, Fauci has researched a wide range of ailments, including HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, tuberculosis, malaria, Ebola, and Zika 

In a statement released on Monday, Vice President Biden praised him as a "dedicated public worker"  

IFauci said on his retirement “I want to use what I have learned as NIAID director to continue to advance science and public health”
